Good Honest Chocolat - no word of a lie!
Honest Chocolat was born at the beginning of 2016 in a converted garage in Snells Beach, through the collaboration of husband and wife team Nico and Emily Bonnaud. One a Pastry Chef, the other an Interior Designer - both lovers of chocolate! The business began as a side project with weekend markets and online sales, and a commitment to using unique and high quality single origin chocolate.
It wasn’t before too long, with a Best Chocolate Bar award at the NZ Chocolate Awards in 2017 under their belt, a growing number of wholesale stockists and a following of serious chocoholics, the Honest Chocolat store opened in the heart of Matakana Village in October 2017, with all production being made on site. The range of products has continued to grow, while maintaining a passion for the art of making chocolate and a love of the highest quality and great tasting chocolate.
I am a serious chocolate lover and have to say my favourite Honest Chocolat tablet is the Blueberry & Raspberry - its organic, vegan, palm oil free, gluten and soy free & ethically sourced, what is there not to love about it! Why are you doing what you do/motivation to start your business?
We both love chocolate, and saw a gap in the market for the type of chocolate we wanted to eat ourselves! High quality, amazing tasting chocolate, that makes you feel good.
How did you decide on your brand/business name/any specific meaning behind it?
We felt Honest reflects the product. We only use chocolate from sustainable and ethical sources and doesn’t contain soy. All our products are gluten free and all our dark chocolates are dairy free.
Biggest lesson you’ve learnt in business?
Remember why you do what you do and believe in yourself!
Got a tip for the best way to use/consume your product?
To savour this chocolate, let a square begin to melt on your tongue. This lets the cacao butter coat the palate and work with the strength of the cacao solids. With any good chocolate the aromas should linger for some time after.
What are some small things that make your day?
The feedback and comments from our customers. Putting smiles on people’s faces is the best motivation!
What takes up too much of your time?
Favourite thing to do to relax/unwind?
A walk on our local beach.
What are you most grateful and thankful for in your life?
Family, friends and freedom!
